As I build––for the FIRST time since my child was born 5+ years ago––a community of friends who are parents of color, I can attest that being a parent of color in Seattle is the *loneliest*, most heartbreaking experience ever. It's the Seattle freeze on steroids.

I've had parents TURN away from me on the playground. The new mum group I joined wouldn't talk to me. The educator refused to help me when I asked for resources with loneliness (now I know it was PPD). My OBGYN switched the subject to HER postpartum experience when I shared mine

Mums invited me to HH's, then systematically left me out (I would see on social media). Leaving my child out of playdates/birthday parties of the friends he played with at school. White mum who turned other way when I said hi at school until she realized I was SPEAKING at her org

If you live in Seattle and are reading this as a parent (or to-be parent or planning-on-parenting), PLEASE build your community ASAP. Other countries aren't like this (and the few other cities I've been to with my child) but if you're a POC in Seattle with a kid....Good luck. ЁЯТФ

This is horrible, I am so sorry. The Seattle freeze would be enough on its own...can't imagine navigating that plus all the other layers. I'm not a parent but this hits such a chord in me. I am so happy you are building/finding community

I feel this. Most of my parent friends of color live elsewhere (cross country), and I’ve only recently connected with a group of moms who share some critical lived experiences by way of non-profit engagement/networking & @JackandJillInc ❤️ hang in there. Community takes time.

I can attest to similar experiences. Its been gamechanging to cultivate meaningful friendships with other families of color. Not being seen and a fear of being seen are a reinforcing loop. #breakthecycle
