How Will Twitter Change? there are a number of money-making features that Twitter hasn’t implemented over the years, such as the edit button that Musk has clamored for or creative reels that would make it more competitive with Instagram and TikTok. ........ It’s a “town square” where ordinary citizens can discuss topics of the day, where companies introduce new products and get consumer feedback, where celebrities talk to their fans, and where public officials talk directly to their constituents. ......... They don’t want to choke free speech with too many prohibitions, yet they realize that controlling misinformation and disinformation is a topline responsibility. ......... he said Twitter should not regulate free speech beyond the laws of the countries it operates in. ......... SEC filings reveal that Musk will borrow about $13 billion and spend $21 billion of his own money to buy Twitter. ......... The borrowing will result in both Musk and Twitter carrying significant debt ....... Musk would be the “most indebted CEO in America” if the deal is completed ......... “The best Twitter from a business perspective looks very different from the Twitter that’s created for public discourse.”

Most Americans ever quit in March Four-and-a-half million Americans quit their jobs in March, as employers posted 11.5 million openings — both the highest levels since records began almost a quarter-century ago. Tightness in the labor market has resulted in there being nearly two open jobs for every unemployed worker, as companies struggle to find enough employees to meet rebounding demand during the pandemic recovery. The pressure on wages, as employees quit for better jobs or pay elsewhere, is reinforcing expectations the central bank will lift borrowing costs by half a percentage point on Wednesday.

The Countdown Memorandum Doubling down on the future of American industry ....... While capital is increasingly a commodity, talent is certainly not. The right engineer can have an asymmetric effect on a company’s trajectory....... It is therefore impossible to build a highly successful hard tech business without possessing the ability to recruit the best engineers, and this is no easy task. ..... Early-stage engineers often graduate from school with a nebulous idea of the range of career options available to them. ....... it’s critical for founders to reason from foundational truths and values rather than from analogies or hearsay. ....... through intensive conversations with our advisory network of operators, decision-makers, and engineers across various hard tech industries. ...... holding strong first principles hinges on a delicate balance between skepticism about the present and optimism for the future ...... industry outsiders (as opposed to deeply entrenched domain experts) may develop the most valuable perspectives when attempting to disrupt an antiquated market. ........ The most successful founders, in every sense of the word, relentlessly paint a vision of a brighter future and build with that vision in mind. ....... Engineers will work more fervently and passionately for a future they believe is meaningful.

Meet Europe’s largest crypto miner Northern Data can mine more than €20m worth of cryptocurrency per month — and it’s almost entirely run on renewable energy ....... Six months ago, Northern Data made a big move. It spent €365m buying a company called Decentric, acquiring tens of thousands of high-powered servers that could be used to “mine” millions of euros worth of cryptocurrencies. The deal propelled the little-known German company into a whole new league, in a stroke making it Europe’s largest crypto miner. ......... In an industry dominated by big US miners such as Core Scientific, Marathon and Riot, suddenly there was a European force on the scene. ....... Northern Data now has 390 petaflops and 13 terahashes (for the uninitiated, that means 13 trillion operations a second) of processing power at its sites in Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands and Germany — powered almost entirely by renewable energy (a rare thing in this sector). ........ Northern Data can mine around 5,254 ether and 236 bitcoin per month — which have a combined value of more than €20m (at today’s prices at least). ........ The cost of the hardware is significant. The power consumption is epic. And the business of finding land with a power source big enough for both the processing and for cooling the machines is tough. ....... for those that get it right, and are believers that the crypto craze will continue, it feels like the California gold rush: a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to extract an enormous amount of value from essentially nothing. .......... Crypto now accounts for 0.6% of the world’s total energy consumption and burns more electricity annually than Norway ........ Last year China banned crypto mining and other countries have followed suit. In January, the top EU financial regulator renewed calls for a bloc-wide “ban” on the main form of crypto mining (known as “proof of work”). .......... Northern Data has a long-term plan to be more than a miner, using the money from crypto mining to build the infrastructure for a significant cloud computing operation — entering a much more stable space dominated by Amazon, Microsoft and Google. ....... There are more and more use cases for crypto every day — for example in remittances and in digital art — and it feels like Northern Data is one of those at the forefront of a new financial world. ........... “Our hardware can be used for artificial intelligence, rendering media and self-driving cars — as well as scientific and engineering endeavours… this is all a huge growth area.”

Northern Data Hires Chief People Officer as Part of Its Business Expansion Strategy Northern Data firmly believes that High-Performance Computing (HPC) will - quite literally - determine what the future will hold. HPC has the power to unlock unprecedented potential and opportunities for research and development, business, and government. ...... The Northern Data Group currently operates custom, large-scale data centers and proprietary mobile high-performance data centers and employs a workforce of over 180 people in seven countries. ..... The newly added machines increased the company’s hashrate from 2 exahash per second in February to 3.95 EH/s by the end of March.

Ukraine Is Now America’s War, Too The U.S. is leading a new coalition of “nations of good will” as the goal expands from supporting Ukraine to weakening Russia and outlasting Putin. ......... in just over nine weeks, the conflict has rapidly evolved into a full proxy war with Russia, with global ramifications. ......... when dictators do not pay the price for their aggression, they cause more chaos and engage in more aggression,” the President told reporters on Thursday. “They keep moving. And the costs, the threats to America and the world, keep rising.” ...... the new aid is about half the size of the entire Russian defense budget—and also more than half of the U.S. State Department’s annual budget. ........ He also brokered a five-thousand-word agreement with the Chinese President, Xi Jinping, to form a de-facto alliance of authoritarian regimes. They jointly opposed nato enlargement. ........ “We want to see Russia weakened to the degree it can’t do the kinds of things that it has done in invading Ukraine,” Austin told reporters, near the border in Poland. Blinken said, “We don’t know how the rest of this war will unfold, but we do know that a sovereign, independent Ukraine will be around a lot longer than Vladimir Putin is on the scene.” ....... The shift may have been inevitable, given the barbarism of the war, which has claimed thousands of civilian lives, and Russia’s challenge to the conventions and obligations of modern statecraft. “If this is left to stand, if there is no answer to this aggression, if Russia gets away with this cost-free, then so goes the so-called international order” ......... the stunning underperformance of the Russian military, the largest in Europe ...... Guterres’s trip to Kyiv followed talks with Putin in Moscow. ....... “The war is an absurdity in the twenty-first century,” he said. “The war is evil.” ......... On April 22nd, a senior Russian military commander announced that Moscow sought “full control” over eastern and southern Ukraine in part to open the way to neighboring Moldova, a tiny, landlocked country that is supportive of the European Union but dependent on Russian energy. ......... roughly two-thirds of Americans believe that the U.S. has a “moral responsibility” to do more to stop the killing of civilians in Ukraine ........... On Wednesday, he warned that he could launch a “lightning-fast” response to any nation that intervened to thwart or threaten Russia. “We have all the instruments for this, such that no one can boast of,” he said, in an apparent reference to Moscow’s nuclear and missile arsenal. “We’re going to use them if we have to.”

5th Wave? New York COVID Hospitalizations Top 2,000, Nearly Tripling in a Month In the five boroughs, health officials upped the COVID alert level to medium earlier this week for the first time since Mayor Eric Adams debuted the new system as part of his pandemic approach ....... 2,119 New Yorkers were hospitalized with COVID across the state's 10 regions, a 153% increase since April 3 alone though still well below the nearly 13,000 admitted during the variant's January surge peak. ..... The share of COVID patients hospitalized in Central New York, which was driving New York's COVID uptick a few weeks ago, is 62.4%, much higher than the state average ....... a higher-than-national-average prevalence of the omicron subvariants BA.2.12.1 and BA.2.12......... is 25% more contagious than the "inherently more transmissible" omicron BA.2 subvariant that came before it ...... the high end of the CDC's estimate for BA.2.12.1's national prevalence is 45%, with BA.2 still believed to be driving the majority of cases across America ....... an indoor face mask mandate for all people regardless of vaccination could return.

Apple, Google, and Microsoft will soon implement passwordless sign-in on all major platforms The tech giants want to roll out FIDO passkey technology in the coming year ........ A passwordless login process will let users choose their phones as the main authentication device for apps, websites, and other digital services ....... Unlocking the phone with whatever is set as the default action — entering a PIN, drawing a pattern, or using fingerprint unlock — will then be enough to sign in to web services without the need to ever enter a password, made possible through the use of a unique cryptographic token called a passkey that is shared between the phone and the website. ........ users can sign-in on a Google Chrome browser that’s running on Microsoft Windows—using a passkey on an Apple device.” ....... an end-to-end passwordless experience with phishing-resistant security

A coronavirus subvariant called omicron BA.2.12.1, first spotted in upstate New York, is likely to become the dominant strain in the United States in the coming week ...... Omicron subvariants have been growing “in part because they have become more difficult for our immune system to ‘see’” ........ Over a Million Flee as Afghanistan’s Economy Collapses Thousands of Afghans are trying to sneak into Iran and Pakistan each day, as incomes have dried up and life-threatening hunger has become widespread.
The Lessons of Brooklyn Tech
So, You Think the Republican Party No Longer Represents the People
One Day in the ‘Parallel Universe’ of a London I.C.U. Britain’s government may have lifted coronavirus restrictions, but hospital workers say the return to a normal rhythm of work is still a long way off. “You know, in Wave 1, we were heroes,” said Ms. Jenkins, the leader of the nursing team. “By Wave 2, we were the enemy. And that’s hard.”

Clues to the Next Variant Are All Around Us But there are places to look that may help scientists find new variants even faster: sewage and the air. People can shed the coronavirus in their feces and their exhaled breath. As a result, the virus can be spotted before people have been tested or developed symptoms.

What America Would Look Like in 2025 Under Trump “Call it ‘soft fascism’ ” ....... a political system that aims to stamp out dissent and seize control of every major aspect of a country’s political and social life, without needing to resort to “hard” measures like banning elections and building up a police state. One of the most disconcerting parts of observing Hungarian soft fascism up close is that it’s easy to imagine the model being exported. While the Orban regime grew out of Hungary’s unique history and political culture, its playbook for subtle repression could in theory be run in any democratic country whose leaders have had enough of the political opposition......... “Orban consolidated power through tactics that were procedurally legal but, in substance, undercut the rule of law. He stacked the courts with partisans and pressured, captured or shut down independent media.” ....... “Orban’s open assault on academic freedom — including banning gender studies and evicting the Central European University from Hungary — finds analogies in current right-wing efforts in Republican-controlled states to ban the teaching of critical race theory and target liberal and left-wing academics.” .....

Hungary is becoming what Denmark is for the left: part real-life model, part idealized dreamscape.

........ Trump will push the United States in a broadly similar direction: toward neopatrimonial governance. During his first term, Trump treated the presidency as his own personal property — something that was his to use to punish enemies, reward loyalists and enhance his family’s wealth. If he wins in 2024, we’re likely to see this on steroids ......... The U.S. is a large federation with a lot of capacity for private violence, a major international footprint and a multitrillion-dollar economy. Hungary is a minor player in a confederation dominated by democratic regimes............. Orban’s appeal to the right flank of the Republican Party, in Cooley’s view, lies in an ideology — which rests on redefining the meaning of “the West” away from liberal principles and toward ethnonational ideals and conservative values — and his strategy for consolidating power is to close or take over media, stack the courts, divide and stigmatize the opposition, reject commitments to constraining liberal ideals and institutions and publicly target the most vulnerable groups in society — e.g., refugees............

Orban has described Hungary under his rule as an “illiberal democracy.”

........ would be fueled by increased moral panic about white America’s decline ....... there is an active plan to reshape the political system so that elections are not winnable by Democrats, and the state be run without the foundation of a democracy......... The use of citizens as informants to enforce intrusions of this sort is, to put it mildly, inconsistent with democratic norms — reminiscent of East Germany, where the Stasi made use of an estimated 189,000 citizen informers. ...... A critical issue for Senate Republicans and a second Trump administration would be whether to eliminate the filibuster to prevent Democratic senators from blocking their wilder legislative plans. ...... The politics of a populist Republican administration will aim at undermining American democracy and changing the level playing field in favor of a party-penetrated state apparatus.

In Responses to Russia, U.S. Stands Firm on Who Can Join NATO In responses to Moscow’s security demands, the U.S. and NATO rejected a demand that Ukraine never join the alliance but offered more transparency on missile deployments in Eastern Europe. the Biden administration proposes a reciprocal “transparency mechanism” under which Russia could verify the absence of offensive missiles at the sites in Romania and Poland, while the United States would do the same at two missile-launching bases of its choice in Russian territory; one would likely include Kaliningrad, the slice of Russia bordering two Eastern European NATO members, Lithuania and Poland....... The flurry of diplomacy on the Ukraine crisis is proceeding along two broad tracks, one between Russia and the United States and NATO that included the exchange of published demands and written replies, the other a preparation for a summit of the leaders of France, Germany, Russia and Ukraine.

"I Don't Want To Be A Mother To A Man"

What It’s Like to Be a Black Student at an Elite Boarding School We spoke with Kendra James, the author of “Admissions: A Memoir of Surviving Boarding School.” When James first arrived as a freshman, she was determined to make friends with white students — but nothing really worked out. She was the girl who was all but ignored by her white roommate. She was the girl who never got a “crush can,” a school tradition, from an admirer. It didn’t matter that her father also went to Taft, James couldn’t seem to fit in........ At some point in my senior year, the boys in one of the dorms decided to start peeing in bottles and dumping it out the dorm windows. I just remember one day, during English class, we all ran over to the window, because I think one of the bottles had landed on someone, or very close to someone, on the sidewalk. ......... I just would never send my child away to a place that I cannot get to within 15 to 20 minutes. ....... How can a white adult be in loco parentis to a Black child if that white adult does not have the tools, or the instincts, that are often necessary when it comes to being the parent of a Black child in America? That just stays with me. That’s simply something that you can’t change.

How It Feels to Be an Asian Student in an Elite Public School Stuyvesant, Brooklyn Tech and other schools across the country are under pressure to end entrance exams. Students have complicated feelings about that.......... Brooklyn Technical High School — Bengali and Tibetan, Egyptian and Chinese, Sinhalese and Russian, Dominican and Puerto Rican, West Indian and African American. ....... Fully 63 percent of Brooklyn Tech’s students are classified as economically disadvantaged. Census data shows that Asians have the lowest median income in the city and that a majority speak a language other than English at home. ........ Brooklyn Tech, which sits in the haute brownstone neighborhood of Fort Greene, is regarded as a diamond in the city’s educational crown, along with the Bronx High School of Science and Stuyvesant High School. ....... Nearly all balked, however, at describing it as segregated, not least because the descriptor “Asian” encompasses disparate ethnicities, cultures, languages and skin colors. ...... Those who champion specialized high schools point to alumni who became top scientists, among them 14 Nobel Prize laureates. With few exceptions these were the children of working-class and immigrant families. The best students, they argue, should press as far ahead as brains and curiosity might take them. .......

There is a Dong and a Doogan, a Goyer and a Huynh, a Subah and a Wai.

............ “I became aware of internalized shame at not being white and wealthy,” she said. “I learned kids did not sit at home in summer: They went to ‘camp.’” ....... She got in and the local Bengali newspaper ran her photograph and those of other Bengali teenagers who gained admittance to specialized high schools. “Family honor is tied to it,” she said. “It’s kind of embarrassing.” ........ There were Bengalis and Pakistanis and Indians, the Brown Squad. There was a Latino Squad, a Russian Squad, a Black Squad, similar in their yearnings. She stayed up past midnight doing homework, one advanced course piled atop another. ............ He applied to the highly competitive Mark Twain Middle School and scored in the 97th percentile. The test cutoff was the 98th percentile. ..... “Bring grades or class rank into it if you need to; we should strive for a world where we don’t need Brooklyn Tech,” said Ayaan Ali, a senior whose parents emigrated from Pakistan. “But abolishing the test is like putting a Band-Aid over a gunshot wound.”

‘A Beginner’s Guide to America’ Review: Welcome to a New World Newcomers encounter pleasing surprises, troubling flaws—and, not least, the suspicions of previous newcomers. ........

Immigrants to America quickly learn that you don’t bargain when shopping. If a fishmonger prices something at $7.50 a pound, you don’t offer to buy it for $4.50, telling him that a fish that’s been dead longer than your grandfather (God rest his soul) can’t be worth what he asks.

A fixed price, says Roya Hakakian, can be depressing to immigrants for whom haggling was once “the most satisfying aspect of any shopping experience.” And yet, with its immense and disarming cultural genius, America offers the recent arrival something in lieu of the pleasure (now lost) of being able to beat a vendor down: the right to return a purchased product.

The Worst of the Omicron Wave Could Still Be Coming A long descent from a peak in cases could exact a larger toll than even Omicron’s blistering ascent. .......... February will be better; March, rosier still. Americans will get something like a Hot Post-Omi Spring. ........ The decline could be sharp and fast, or sputtering and slow. It could start off steep, then lose steam. It could plateau—or even reverse course and tick back up. ........ We need to prepare for the possibility that this wave could have an uncomfortably long tail—or at least a crooked one. “I do think the decline is unlikely to be as steep as the rise,” Saad Omer, an epidemiologist at Yale, told me. ......... When this tide turns hinges on when Omicron starts to run out of new people to infect—either because it has burned through everyone it can or because we, through our behaviors, starve it of hosts. ....... Yes, the United States’ population is more vaccinated than South Africa’s, but it’s also older. (And lots of Americans over 65 aren’t boosted.) The two countries’ health profiles, medical infrastructures, and approaches to controlling SARS-CoV-2 differ; so do the behaviors of their residents. Omicron also caught South Africa as it was heading into summer; the United States may have a tougher time unsticking itself from the virus during colder months. And Delta, which was already driving surges of its own before Omicron arrived, hasn’t yet disappeared here. ...........

each community will experience its own, unique Omicron spike

......... How we react to the curve could also stretch it out, and that’s the biggest wild card of all. When people hear that we’ve skittered past the top of a peak, “psychologically, they loosen up,” UNC’s Lessler told me. (This is something that many epidemic models don’t account for.) Masks come off. Schools, workplaces, and leisure venues reopen. People rejoin social circles, or kick-start new ones. Smaller shifts such as these, multiplied by millions, can turn a waterfall decline into molasses. “So much of susceptibility is tied up in behavior,” Majumder said. And as people get further out from their most recent vaccination or infection, their risk of catching the virus goes back up. .......... Even if the United States’ curve turns out to be symmetrical, half of this wave’s infections, and more than half of its hospitalizations and deaths, are still ahead, past the peak of cases. ....... We heard this lesson early on in the pandemic, when cases were first rising at alarming rates: mask up, hunker down, flatten the curve. It’s still true now. The hope is that the lower the peak, the fewer unnecessary infections can occur after it ......... The key here, then, is to avoid seeing “past the peak” as a cue to relapse into riskier behavior. “The start of a decline is not sufficient to think we’re out of the woods”

January 7: Kisan Andolan, January 6, Omicron

New ‘Variant of Concern’ Fuels Global Fear of Another Virus Surge Scientists do not yet know how dangerous the new Omicron variant is, but its many mutations set off alarms, lowering hopes of putting the pandemic in the past. ...... The world reacted with alarm on Friday to the highly mutated new coronavirus variant discovered in southern Africa, as the United States, the European Union and nations across the globe imposed new travel restrictions, financial markets swooned and visions of finally emerging from the pandemic started to dim. ........... the variant has mutations that might make it more contagious or more virulent, or make vaccines and other preventive measures less effective ........ “preliminary evidence suggests an increased risk of reinfection with this variant” in people who have already had Covid-19 ......... President Biden made the decision to bar travelers from South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique and Malawi, starting Monday, after a briefing by his top advisers on the pandemic, including Dr. Anthony Fauci............ even with quickly enacted travel restrictions, Omicron, like past variants, is certain to spread and reach the United States ........ the doubling time is pretty rapid and the slope of the increase is really rather sharp. .......... Stock indexes and oil prices tumbled around the world, as news of the variant and travel restrictions — coming in the economically vital holiday season — raised fears of yet more financial damage caused by the pandemic. ......... The response to the Omicron variant was especially quick and sharp in Europe, once again the epicenter of the global pandemic, where fights over vaccines and social restrictions have grown increasingly harsh........ Reported coronavirus cases have soared in Europe from about 700,000 a week in early September to 2.6 million a week. The surge began in the less-vaccinated countries of Eastern Europe, but then spread to highly vaccinated nations to the west that had thought they would not be vulnerable and were caught off guard. ..........
