Hello Paramendra,
I have been following your blogs for quite a while now, and appalaud your
leadership to the madhesi peoples movement. Needless to say, the madhesi
demands are long overdue, and the current Nepali government should fulfill
them unconditionally right now. Fundamental rights like self governance, fair
and equitable share in governance and resources of the country, and equal
recognition and political status are such obvious truths it amazes me how
blind the Nepali establishment (read government) is not to see it.

On the issue of federalism, because Madhesis want a federal madheshi state,
they should get it. Same for janajatis. Janajati states will probably be
many and small in size as different janajatis might want to be in different
federal states. And federalism should probably be enacted with a lot of tact
to make sure marginalized groups or minorities currently residing in the
newly formed federal states have a mechanism for integrating into the new
state.

Federalism based on culture, language or race should be only temporary, I
think. Otherwise the country will remain divided for ever. If we have a
language/culture/appearance based federalism and people migrate to remain in
separate homogenous groups of their kin, Nepal will never really develop
economically or culturally for the world of tomorrow. It is only through
living among each other and interacting extensively with each other that
people will begin to see beyond their ethnic differences, and take a mixed
society for granted. Kind of like in the USA : the federal states doe not
represent any ethnic identity. But Nepal is not in that stage yet. The best
beginning is probably to divide and then unite as equals.

How should that happen ? maybe the currently proposed federalism should be
enacted for the next 50 years ( or 100 years ), and in that time we can hope
that all Nepalis will feel secure and fair part of Nepal, with the chance to
carve their own destinies without feeling prejudiced/insulted/unfairly
treated/marginalized/unrecognized. In the next 50 or hundred years, I also
believe the states will be poised to encourage/endorse exchanges of people
and ideas with the other states and begin to benefit from heterogenosity
rather than by remaining homogenous. Then in the next 25 years or so, I
think we will see the formation of true Nepal, as a country unified not only
geographically but in all ways.

I look forward to the day when Nepal could have federal states based on
parameters other than race, culture, language or geography, and still have a
united voice when negotiating with other Nepali states for resource sharing
or for big infra-structural projects.

For now, the immediate solution is just what the people want for now.
Madhesh state, pahad state, maybe more states. Central federal government.
State citizenships. State citizenship leading automatically to National
citizenships.

This is what I think. I am a Pahadi bahun ( hearing a lot of that phrase in
this blog). I support the madhesi movement for their rights. There have been
many instances in this blog asking why the pahadis are quiet. I cannot speak
for others, but for myself I have been quiet because I have been apolitical
all my life. Speaking out for a cause just doesn't come to me. And
especially in big agendas. Maybe it's a mix of a totally non political
pahadi bahun upbringing plus technology and science centered education
without courses on humanities. And my unsureness with my own language and
persuasive skills.

Justice then peace.

Subject: [ND] Re: Discrimination against Madheshi and Change of Heart

Dear All:

Lalit may not have put his thought most diplomatically, but who needs the
diplomatic language when its purpose is to sugar-coat insincerity.
Discrimination is a disease and people who practice discrimination are
sick/diseased. A great majority of the influential leaders of Pahade origin
in Nepal including current prime minister and leaders of congress, communist
and other parties, and have either lived in or grew up in Madhesh. Through
out their lives, these leaders have been not only a part of the power that
discriminated Madheshi and other communities of Nepal but they were
personally involved in making policies that were discriminatory. These
leaders can not be trusted for building better future of Nepal. In my view
they have contagious cancer of unfairness, dishonesty and manipulation that
would not go away. These cancer-carrying souls must be isolated/removed
from power before they spread their disease to more.

Should Madheshi request for being treated like others in Nepal have required
struggle and sacrifice of over a dozen martyrs? Shouldn't the unalienable
right of equality be granted automatically to every Nepali including
Masheshis? Who would be against granting this unalienable rights to
Madheshi
and for what reasons? This question should be raised by every Nepali. Today’
s generation of Nepal must not rely on these sick leaders if they want to
build better Nepal. Let’s talk about ways of getting rid of these sick
people from power and bringing those in power who have vision and dedication
of
providing equality to all. Durable peace is not possible without equality
to all.

Please feel free to comment on my views.
With regards,
Ram Sah

Paramendraji,
Hope you are doing fine. Thanks for updating me on the political situation in Nepal.
By the way, do you read Asia Times online newspaper? I have noticed that there is a journalist (named Dhruba Adhikari) who regularly contributes to this electronic newspaper on the current political issues of Nepal. He presents a distorted picture of the India's role in the political and economic affairs of Nepal, whenever he touches this issue. And in his last article (which he published a few days ago), he tried to implicate India in the current, seemingly grassroot movement of Madhesias against the discrimination by the majority group. I think someone has to write a counter article, which paints the real, unbiased political situation pertaining to Madhesias in Nepal.
I would like to hear from you on this at some point.
Best wishes,
Jai Mehta

Paramendra ji

I think your being sarcastic here. By publishing a couple of opeds in
Kathmandu Post and Nepalnews.com does not make me an insider of
'bahun' media. CK Lal has published tons of article in Nepali Times
(and may in be other newspapers), but I am sure you would not write
him the sort of letter you wrote me. By the way my article was
rejected by Nepali Times.

But on the other hand if you are just teasing me in a friendly manner,
then same to you

Shiva

This is email thread that was started by Rakesh Mishra that has generated lot of good discussion. Please respond as necessary. I will send response as I have time. Thanks!

Hello All,

Recently, I was discussing my friend's cousin's wedding with her. During the conversation, my friend casually mentioned that she did not think the groom was a good match for her cousin. The reason being, because he is a 'madhesi'.
The marginalization of individuals and groups is sustained by such views held by individuals but the ideological structure is surely maintained by the state. The image of a Nepali wearing daura suruwal, dhaka topi and khukuri does not represent all of Nepali people.

Mr. Pokharel probes for reasons why the current movement in Terai has come about. Ideas such as the one's held by my friend is ingrained in non-madhesi populace of Nepal . The undertone of hatred has been widespread for many years. I think what is being displayed in terai now is a reflection of the same hatred madhesis have endured. I do not endorse violence but can imagine the appeal of it for any disenfranchised group wanting to be heard.

Everytime there is a challenge to the government, the hands of 'reactionary forces' are alluded to as being the cause. This was true during 1990 revolution, Moaist movement, April Janaandolan........ The rhetoric easily discounts the demands that are set forth by the people on the street. The construction of a Nepali identity in opposition to that of India so strong that we are easily swayed by the argument that we need to protect ourselves from India's influence at the expense of exclusion of one of our own.

The lack of appropriate steps taken by politicians while people are being killed is disheartening and is another example of how madeshi concerns are being ignored.

Hi Rakeshji!

First of all, opinions should always be welcome, dont bother even if they are baseless. We dont need to go farther than 1980s, if you have been watching the events since the democratic movements that led to referendum you will realize that all the movement started baseless at hindsight of the feudal force that tried to crush the people. I am not a supporter of vandalism and arson nor do I support terrorism. Those who know me personally know very well that what the Maoist did to me and how difficult time I had dealing with them and how I and my staff survived during the hardest time. That time Maoists were the alien for us but how we were treated by the royal forces during Gyanendras rule especially during the so called election prompted me to take the street like I did in 36 and 46 Sals andolan.

Earlier I thought Moaists deserved to be crushed and they can not fight even with the police but they defeated Royal army at many places. Later when I visited remote village I noticed that the Maoist movement not only had expanded but also brought awareness of peoples right that had been eluding the poor Nepali at least for last 250 years. So, the war proved to have solid base. The main cause of problem, the monarchy, needs to abolished.

I would not like to be called so but they call me Pahade, I have a stayed in the Terai and know about how the Madhesis are: they love Nepal as much as we do, if not more. This movement is not aimed at creating Terai as next Sikkim , in no way. If there is anyone who talks about a separating, he/she can not be a Nepali. But, asking for right is valid and when you have support that the terai movement is now getting, I feel there must some valid reason else, you can not continue longer. I am also hurt now, because I dont know why the Madhesi movement had to come now? Where were they when the Maoist fought the war and feudal forces were crushing us? So, I see there is infiltration from the reactionary forces and may be some foreign hands but that is no excuse. It seems, the majority in the Terai feel that they have not been treated fairly then it must be true and they should get fair treatment.

But, I am in confision, why dont they come to the talk-table when the Prime Minister has already called them? My opinion is Madhes should resort to solve the problem in peaceful manner, and solve everything at the table or from the Constituent assembly.

Finally, good thing is Nepal is headed for a federal republic set up, which is for sure.

Sanat

Dear Ms. Koirala

I am writing this mail in response to you article published on Nepal news. I, as a madhesi can not keep silent to your racially charged and mentally bankrupt propositions. I am also sending this mail to a group of my freinds so that they can have some idea of an "Enlightened " vision of a nepali educated(probably) and working in a free American society.

To start with, you try to justify the necessity of king citing example of Afganistan and Iran . Have you ever heard about brutality of Shah Pehlawi and aristocracy of Zaheer Shah. You still live in medieval age where brutal force was used to create and sustain nations. There are many examples like France ....and at least 50 other countries where monarchy was thrown out after world war two and those countries have fared well. This is not a question of who did what? Who is doing what...is more important in deciding the fate of any political and historical institution. I have no grudge against prithivi N Shah and I don't support vandalising his statue but I am equally opposed to the notion that a person, how much noble or whatever, can create a nation and sustain it. He was just a creation of time and space...nothing more than that ...nothing less than that.

You have spitted out all your venom against madhesi community. You are opposing Prachanda for labelling Upendra yadav, a thug and criminal but just to express your superficial anger at maoists, but in turn in your article, you are supporting the same tendency, send armed forces to terai....and crush this movement....Ms. Koirala , be sure its a solution which will be a "bomb" on terirtorial integrity(?) of Nepal. How come, you are asking Madhesis to ask about the reason of our exclusion from Army to Britsh and Indian governments? Do you think policies of Nepal government is guided by policies of Indian and Britsh governments? Tell the truth...what you think.

I will request all to whom this message is sent to respond.....and silence a hawks like you.......who are responsible for rise of separatist ideology in Madhesh. Just click reply to all button.....if u want or keep silent, and wait. If you don't like this mail in you mail box, let me know. I will never send them to your address.
