Feedback, NSU, USA Canada Chapter Press Release

Fulfill the genuine demands of Terai people through talks

Sunday, January 28, 2007

The population of Nepali Madhesi is 9 million approximately in Nepal, i.e. one third of Nepal's 27 million populations. The Terai region of Nepal are dominated by Nepali Madhesi and it is situated in the southern parts of Nepal bordering India.

According to the newly promulgated interim constitution of Nepal, have failed to resolve the problems facing by the “TERAI” people. The present government must outline the election constituency on the basis of population and declare Nepal, a Federal Republic state without any conditions.

We urged the Nepal’s Government to give full recognition to Madhesi people as Nepali from mountainous region. Let them share the power and the rights equally. They are also the first class citizens. We are in the 21st century, let us all have equal opportunity in the nation building process. We never had ethnic clashes so far and we don’t want it to grow like flames. Our leaders must act it immediately to stop the tense in the terai region and call for the dialogue tonight. We don’t want any “Royalists” taking advantage from this issue. Royalists are ready to add kerosene in the fire.

The contribution of Madhesis in April Revolution (Janaandoolan II) is commendable. The Nepal Government should not put their genuine demands aside instead call them for round table conference to settle the problems peacefully. We all want to see peace (after 12 years of civil war), harmony, justice, fairness and equal participation, and an exercise in democracy. The most importantly, we should stop discriminating Madhesis immediately. Let us live in harmony.

Sincerely,

……………………..

Bhagat jee,

I have no interest on your blog, please remove my name from your database.
I have never register on your blog, i don;t know where you get my id.

I don;t want anymore of your emails. Please stop.

thanks

Dear Paramendra ji
You know what is going on in Madhesh. It has cought fire many madhesies have been killed but still the govt is quite.Even if kiorala want to address for the demand of the madeshi but prachanda is not willing to do so.It seems Prachand is a big tanashah of this time next to saddam hussain.he is the greatest enemy of madhesh and madheshi today.

Paramendra jee,

Thank you very much for your inquery about the Terai crisis. Oviously, I am
eagerly looking the Terai incident. I have great sympathy to them. I am very
much concern about two things in Nepal

1. The existing social harmony among the Nepali people should not be broken.
2. Nation should not be splited in the name of politics.
Whether they are Madeshi or Pahadi, all the deprived group should be unite
and find out the solution soon. Lets talk over phone on this matter.

Your's

Excellent point. Some may be even conspiring against the movement.

Read my article in Ktm Post of June 22- its a critic of the proposed
electoral method.

See, I am in Biratnagar and the victim of the current crisis. I have been abused by the Madesis on the way to my factory and the way back to my home. Why the hell should i be abused?? Is this a peacefull demonstration where they carry home made pistols, sticks , rods ??? You, living there far away should not comment without a careful observation or source...Pahade'z are quite now but the day they come on to streets , god knows what is going to happen...This clearly means pahade'z are supporting the madesis..They have not created any obstacle rather have shut down all the industries , transports..

Moreover , why would you demand 25 lacs for the person who died in the demonstration and why not for the lady who died not being able to rush to the hospital because of the band...This means , you are accountable to only who are involved directly with politics...what about the normal ppl????
comment!!!!

It is very much right, pertinent and timely.

What are you try to say using following sentence in your blog

Manu makhu marsya wala

Would you kindly explain little more detail ?
You are crying for Madhesi 's right and I am fighting for NEWAR'S right.

It should not be the Pahadi and Madhese issues because we all are Nepalese.
the main problems and issues are the political leaders who are attracted to
the post and neglegting all nepalese's future. everything is politicise
which is dangerous for all of us.

motherfucker i dont know who you are and i dont fuckin care to know either. dickhead I'm not pissed at your opinion or anything. fucking son of a bitch stop fuckin sending mails to me. fuckin homo, if i see one more mail from you in my mail box i would be pissed as fuck. so dont send anymore of mails to me, i didnt signup for anything or any group.

Dear Roger:

I'm so sorry to hear about your house. I have been to your house in Bhanu Chauk several times. It truly saddens me to know that this event is happening in our home town. There is no justification for this kind of violence act. Hurting innocent people/property is "no way" to fight for legitimate rights.

Knowing personally how dedicated you have been to uplifting of Teraibasi, I can not imagine how hurt you and your family may be. I along with our ANTA friends share in your hurt and disappointment. Hope you find forgiveness for the people who are participating in this kind of "cowardly act". We must learn "tit for tat" has never worked nor will ever work.

Let us be strong in our resolve to do what is right.

Please accept our heartfelt sorrow!

Lalit

Lalit,

I Agree with you; it's a moral obligation of all Nepalis, including the members of this forum to address Tarai's issue. Growing up in Tarai (five generations), I am aware of the personal experience you may have gone through. And I believe, no one should have to endure such experience any where, let alone in their country. While, I must confess my awareness of such matters were less of bothersome when I was growing up in Janak Pur. May be it was due to my age (I left Janak Pur at 16) and or because I didn't care then because it didn't personally impact me.

However, for the last three decades, specially since coming to America, I have given lots of thought in this matter and have spoken with many people of such disparity and unfairness bestowed upon Madhesis by the Nepal government; from Ranas to the recent elected government.

I believe, it is high time for Nepalis from all walks of life to speak loud against this unfairness. The Government of Nepal must have a peaceful dialogue with the Madheshi leaders for seeking a peaceful equitable settlement.

On the personal side, My brother from Colorado just called me to say that our home near Bhanu Chowk, where I and seven of my siblings grew up, was put on fire by the mob.

As you may know, all members of my family, including my parents, live in America. Therefore, my family is unharmed from this event. But until this morning smoke was still coming out of our home. I hope your family is doing fine.

Thank You,

Roger

Dear Roger (my Suraj),

I am really hurt to know that current stream of violence is turning away from the real cause, and is now disturbing the communal harmony, in which we had been living in Terai, including Janakpur, our own place. I am really shocked to know that your house, the one I have been several times (I even could not count) was attacked. Few hours ago, I got the message that a mob was proceeding towards Lila Koirala's house. While I feel that voices had to be raised against the discrimination bestowed upon madheshis by the Nepal Government and its machineries, I beleive that no one should support the violence. In that respect, the initial movement by the people in Terai could be considered genuine, but by no reason, the current violence against whole pahadi community is justified. The struggle should be against policy and the government or 7/8 party leaders and the ones who implement such policies, but not against whole pahadi community.

As a Madheshi, like Lalit, all of us have faced the question by pahadis, 'Are you Indian? or really, you are a Nepali. How can it be?". I myself have faced this question million times, whether that was in Kathmandu or Thailand or US. It does not mean that all pahadis look at madheshis in the same way.Despite this, we know that many of our closest friends and bestwishers are pahadis. Though this kind of question (or say discrimination) has become more common in recent years. In my view, it is because of a shift in paradigm how people of Terai origin (I mean Madheshis, as I know Roger's several generations have been living in Terai) is looked at by Non-madheshis. In early decades, even till late seventies, when the Kathmandu was dominated by Newars, Terai was dominated by madheshis, and hills and mountains by pahadis (Khas language speaking people), the sense of feeling was of Pahadi and Madheshi, both living in harmony, because Kathmandu was percieved as Nepal, and the people, mostly Newar and also some elite Pahadis there in, were considering themselves true Nepali. Even pahadis were lagging behind, and they were considered 'Pakhe'. But, in last two and half decades (especially after 2036 BS movement), while an increase in education and the migration of people from mountains and hills to Kathmandu and Terai has aided multifacet development in several aspects, it has given birth of the feeling of Nepali and Madheshi (non-Nepalis). This shift in paradigm gradually alienet the Madheshi community more and more. (I will write more on this with examples sometime later). Not only feeling, but it got translated in action too. As the result, hundreds of thousands of Madheshis have been denied from citizenship, which is the first basic human right. The current uprise in the Terai is the expression of such alienation.

We, as the members of intellectual societiy, have the moral duty to support the genuine voice, but not the VIOLENCE. The question is how can we the support? We have to raise the voice that current citizenship drive should accomplish its mission as soon as possible and give the citizenship to all genuinne Nepalis (both Madheshis and Pahadis). When we see the news, it tells different story. While news mentioned that >1100 people were given citizenship in Rolpa and Rukum, it highlights that mostly Indians are in que to get citizenships in Terai. This prejudice concept that mostly Indians are seeking the citizenship in Terai, is partially the result of a shift in paradigm that I mentioned above. Otherwise why instead of 3 (as in new law), 5 people will be asked to verify the candidate, and many other instances are like this. The citizenship teams, and that goes up in chain of command, need to be frank and hones,t and they distribute the citizenship in Terai as early as possible. Second point is the representation in decision making process. Even we forget how a decision about policy has been made so far in the country, we know that the future of the country will be written by the members of consituent assembly. If the assembly will not proportionate representation of the diverse group of people, how the interest of each group will be served. So, demand for representation on the basis of populaiton should be considered. Yes, some special arangement has to made to assure that minority group is also heard.

I am not aware of ND fourm, but I beleive that people from all fourms should raise these concerns strongly, and codemn any VIOLENCE, whether that is committed by security person, maoists, pahadis or madheshis, whatever.

Finally, I express my deep sorrow for what happens to your house in Janakpur. I am always with you at every turn.

Take me off your blog site, please.

welcome. what else can we tell you? btw, we could not
understand, why people with such great talent, vision
and achievement still crave for personal show-offs?
those are trivial things, isn't it (correct us, if
not). you have already great status in Nepal, among
leaders, but still why ?

and just a reminder, you today sent more than 6 (?)
emails to group, which have -ve rather than +ve
effect, they start treating as spam, and delete
without looking inside. cheers.

Please take me of your list

Dear Paramendra Kumar Bhagat ji,

Janakpur, Birganj, Lahan, Biratnagar, Rajbiraj and whole Madhes is burning.
This time madhesy is fighting for their right. But Madhesy was fighting for
Pahiriya so far. We want independent and seperate Madhesy state. Madhesy
Andolan Alliance.

Jay Madhesh !

Who the fuck you are sending me all these emails. I do not want to receive anymore.

Hamne madesh jalaraha hae dekha aag bujhaane ne ke liye kuchha to karnahi hogaa. Ye netaa log aesaahi hotaahae apane jagaha surakshit karneke liye.

Whereever you have used the word Nepali should be changed into'Nepalese' because your blog is not only for NEPALI but for entire people of NEPAL. So Nepali convention 2008 should be NEPALESE convention 2008. The word Nepali was replaced for GORKHALI, some 80-90 years ago. NOW is the time of NEPALESE not just NEPALI.

Hi all,

This is a footage from recent "ethnic violence" in Nepalgung. Reminds
me of the Bombay riot in which the police inclined towards the "Hindu
groups" against the Muslims. You can see how the police are joining the
"hill groups" to control the riots. This is not juts a crowd behavior,
but an expression of the underlying ethnic tension, especially hatred
towards the Madheshi people [here Muslims?)- as if all of them are
Indian in disguise.

** WARNING: it has some graphic violent scenes and "vulgar languages".

These two words carry different meanings one is inclusive and other one is exclusive of non nepali (Khas) speaking people.

Top women leaders tell of Nepal’s struggle for peace and democracy

The people of Nepal were caught for years between a violent Maoist insurgency and a king who reacted by dissolving the parliament and imposing authoritarian rule.

But over the past year, “something very unique has happened in our country,” said Sarita Giri at a panel of top women politicians from Nepal, “Nepal at the Crossroads: The Path to Peace.”

The panel at the School of International Service included the highest-ranking woman in Nepali politics, Chitra Lekha Yadav, reappointed last week as deputy speaker of the House of Representatives.

After a decade of bloodshed, there is now hope that Nepal can become an example of a country where an insurgency ends peacefully when political parties and guerillas find common ground.

A coalition formed by the Maoists and seven mainstream parties led to an outpouring of popular protest last year against the king’s rule, forcing him to relinquish absolute power. Now a cease-fire is in effect as the country prepares for an election that will lead to rewriting the constitution and could redefine, or even abolish, the role of the king.

In effect, “the political parties embraced a long-term demand of the Maoists,” said Yadav, the deputy speaker, who is also a leader of the large Nepali Congress (Democratic) party. The rebels have called for an end to the monarchy, but say they will abide by the results of the “constituent assembly,” or constitutional convention.

“The Nepali people have struggled both against the authoritarianism of the king and against the politics of violence,” said Giri, a leader of the Sadbhavana Party (Anandi Devi), which advocates for the large madhesi ethnic group. “The Nepali people have come to believe that the solution of the conflict lies in having a new constitution . . . and the Maoists also somehow understood their own limitations. They have a correct reading of the world scenario, and what is possible and not possible.”

“The Maoists realized their armed struggle will not work,” agreed Sahana Pradhan. “Ulti-mately it is the peace movement of the people that will work. They were looking for a chance to come out and lay down their arms and join democracy.”

Pradhan is a founder of UML, which stands for Communist Party of Nepal (United Marxist-Leninist) but is a moderate left party.

Nepal became a democracy with a constitutional monarchy in 1990, but the king remained above the law and retained the right to impose direct rule if he chose, which is what King Gyanendra did in the 2005 “royal coup.”

“People now are thinking the trouble has to do with the monarchy,” Pradhan said. “They want this to be the last struggle.”

Hopes for the future are high. Success, though, will depend on the effectiveness of democratic leaders, who are known for squabbling and “passing the buck,” warned Prativa Rana, a leader of the pro-monarchy Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), which views the tradition of royalty as a unifying force in Nepal. Rana raised concern about the tendency of politicians to blame past rulers for current failures, which, she said, is an easier path than taking responsibility for success in the present.

“There was much bickering among political parties,” agreed Pradhan. “Democracy did not work as people expected. People would say, ‘what type of democracy is this?’”

The panelists agreed that one key to success will be greater political power for women. Political parties have now pledged to give a third of their tickets to women, who came out in large numbers to demand a restoration of democracy and call for a constitutional assembly.

“Evidence from all over the world shows women are less corrupt,” Giri said. “We firmly believe that promoting women in political power will definitely lead us to a position of peace and more sustainable democracy.”

The talk was cosponsored by the Peacebuilding and Development Institute at the School of International Service and the Initiative for Inclusive Security at Hunt Alternatives Fund, a foundation that supports leaders of social movements and promotes peace processes. The women have been in the United States for a two-week policy forum in Cambridge, Mass., and Washington, D.C.

Dear Padam ji and Distinguished Members of ND Forum:

Thank you for bringing the attention on discussing the contemporary
issues facing Nepal. It appears to me that the Terai issue is NO
issue to majority of the distinduished members of this forum. Last
April, it was hard to keep tab on the number of e-mails...I don't
understand what happend to those e-mailers today. I cann't understand
why you all are so quiet when half of the country is burning.

I too used to bombard the forum with a Daily Update on Collection of
Funds for Victims and Volunteers of Democracy - igniting flare amongst
the diaspora to support JA-2. Today, nobody is talking about the
victims of Terai Unrest.

Is there something fundamentally wrong with us? Just wondering....

Why Are The Pahadis Quiet?

Hello All:

I take privilege to comment on Mr.Ratan Jha’s e-mail to you. In my view there is something wrong with power holders and intellectuals of Nepal in the way they look at the issues affecting Madhesh. They may have learned the books of democracy and may have capacity to think about the things that affect them but the evidence indicates that they have not been able to wash out the attitude as the colonizers of Madhesh that they have cultivated based on their backgrounds in Nepal. They have not been able to get out of the mindset that Madhesh their colony. Here are reasons for my arguments:

1. History shows that even in the times extreme situations some people showed righteousness towards the oppressed and acted against the oppression. For example, abolitionists worked under very extreme condition during slavery in the USA. In Nepal, throughout the period of Shah rule, not only these power brokers and intellectuals not feel no need to speak their mind against oppression in Madhesh, rather they choose to benefit out misery of the people of Madhesh and assisted the government in oppressing Madheshi’s. Either they did not understand what fairness was or they were selfish and dishonest. I believe that the latter is applicable.

2. In the cover of rehabilitation, they distributed vast tract of land in Madhesh among the people of Pahad (hills) with objective of changing population mix of Madhesh. Traditionally landless Musahar, Chamar and others in Madhesh were not included in rehabilitation. The planners were there intellectuals.

3. They intellectuals who crafted 1990 democratic constitution deliberately chose to be unfair to the people of Madhesh. Do not tell me that they did not know that equal representation and equal opportunity were basis of democracy. They also did not provide avenue for addressing complains against discrimination.

4. The things that come out after the recent democratic revolution also show that the intellectuals of Nepal do not want to fair to the people of Madhesh.

Let us open our minds and speak the truth even it is painful, this is the only way we can reconciliate. Durable peace is not possible without fairness and equality to all--is it so hard to understand? I do not think so.

Regards,
Ram N. Sah

Why Are The Pahadis Quiet?

Ratan! Thanks for bringing forward valid points to the distinguished member of ND Forum. The question you posed why "Terai issue is NO issue to majority of the distinguished members of this forum"?

I would like to believe that Terai issue is of "concern " for the members of ND forum. I do wonder, to what extent (extreme) these concern are really for the ND forum members (who are not from Madhesh origin)? do they see the current terai unrest as simple "nuisance" or can they really relate in their hearts and mind the genuine double standards/discrimination the madheshi people has suffered from the rulers of Hill region over past centuries? Common sense tells me that the "true" compassion is not realistic expectation specially from the people of non-madheshi origin. However since most of the members in ND forum are educated, it is time to discuss openly and caringly about this issues.

Like most madheshi people I grew up feeling inferior to pahadi people as I made it through school and college and two year job instint in nepal. Over the recent years you and I frequently faced question like "are we from India", while attending the NEPALI CONVENTION in US. I do not think those questions were intended to be demeaning or hurtful. What this question pointed out to me is how madhesi people are PERCEIVED in the eyes of people from Hill region, even when most of them have had very good exposure of Terai. I'm afraid that most of the people from Hill region, genuinely feel that Madheshis are really not nepali. In my opinion, this perception is rooted due to the lack of proper education, and political discriminatory policy. When I see the post cards that tourist buys in Nepal, what do you see? majestic Mountains, houses and people from Hill region? very seldom you will see any post cards that reflects madheshi lifestyle and cultural stuff. whether intentional or not, the fact is that integration of Madheshi in main stream has been long ignored. This must be acknowledged from the heart first. Then we must understand that it takes time to change person's mentality. Education, fairness and tireless work are needed.

I have abhorred being treated like second class citizen. I genuinely dis- like the policy's that has led to the suffering of Masheshi people. I believe that people hurt when they see other people hurt "automatically". Knowing my friends from Hill region, I like to believe that they care because I know they are good people when you get to know them.

Education and change of heart is needed. Let us keep doing our part and pray for peace, fairness and Justice for all.

Why Are The Pahadis Quiet?

Madhesi Empowerment

Hello all: The Terai issue deserves all the attention it can get from every quarter simply because the future of Nepal depends on resolving this issue. The debate on the forum should be guided by the positive spirit of frankness and sincere desire to find a resolution; of course, remedy depends on the diagnosis. However, it appears that there is broad agreement on many important points of such diagnosis. Instead of beating around the bush, we should be looking straight at the problem as it is. I applaud the postings made on NDF by ANTA president Ratan Jha and add some preliminary thoughts of my own here. I am sorry about the long posting.

The marginalized status of the people of Terai is visible everywhere in Nepal as well as abroad. The ongoing agitation in the Terai region should not surprise any one. It has been long overdue and one should be grateful for the patience with which the Terains have endured the flagrant violation of their basic citizenship rights and denial of their basic human rights through systematic and institutionalized discrimination by the state. Defensive reaction to what is happening there will not be helpful. Dismissing the demands of the Teraians as being externally driven and inspired by misguided elements will also be only counterproductive. Instead, the national leaders (unfortunately, all of them are Pahadis!) must demonstrate their sincere appreciation of the aggrieved feelings of the people of Terai region and reassure them of their sincerity to work to resolve the underlying problems. The psychic disconnect can not be bridged without sincerity and commitment. The onus is on the national leaders to prove that this can happen.

I remain convinced that the best course for the people of Terai to resolve their grievances is that of negotiation and reconciliation. Violence will only widen the gap between the Pahadis and Madhesis leaving both the communities poorer and more anguished. Nepal has just started its journey away from the decade long trauma and devastation caused by violent course. Continuing disorder and violence will also allow room to those driven by their vested interests to aggravate the situation and advance their nefarious ends. At this critical juncture, Terai is, indeed, the soft underbelly of the ongoing political transition in Nepal. Continuing chaos and disorder in the region can truly jeopardize the peace process that has made remarkable progress over the past year. Every Nepali has a serious stake in making sure that the country completes the ongoing transition to full fledged democracy that embodies freedom and the rule of law as the guiding principles. The plight of Madhesis today is a direct result of decades of malignant political practices perpetuated by an autocratic regime. No one needs democracy more than people who have been traditionally oppressed and marginalized. One has just to look across the border at India to see the difference that democracy can make. One would not be that far off the wall in suggesting that even the current political assertiveness of the Terai people is made possible by the political opening obtained by the April revolution and consequent peace process.

Unfortunately, the unrest in the Terai reinforces the adage that squeaking wheels get the grease. In that sense, one can understand the pleasant tickle that many Teraians feel at the attention that the protests are drawing to the genuine but long neglected grievances of Madhesis. Within months, if not weeks, the Madhesi People’s Rights Forum (MPRF) has risen into national and international limelight. It does have a lot of work to do. However, people of Terai should not expect overnight transformation of realities on the ground. The leaders of ongoing political transition deserve benefit of doubt and one should take their pledges to address the grievances of Terai people sincerely and allow them to demonstrate through their action that they mean what they say. The MPRF and the two factions of the Janatantrik Terai Mukti Morcha (JTMM) should immediately join the government leaders in finding a peaceful way out. The people of Terai must show their fitness for democracy by pursuing a peaceful and persistent course of action to achieve their objectives. In return, the government must refrain from using force against peaceful protests lead the process of change.

Nepal’s political leadership has recently shown remarkable astuteness in the art of accommodation and reconciliation. With respect to Terai, however, the learning curve leaves a lot to be desired. The people of this region have not been taken into confidence during the ongoing transition and they remain outside the mainstream of Nepali politics. The best thing the government can do to pacify the unrest in Terai is to come up with a declaration that lays out the government’s response to the main demands raised by the protesters.

The Nepali state, including the police, the army and the political leadership of all major political parties are in dire need of what could be called “extreme makeover.” They need to look more like Nepal and reflect its diversity. Populated overwhelmingly by the same kind of people connected with each other with multiple reinforcing bonds of caste, kinship and shared privileged status, the higher echelons of government and political leaders of Nepal will find it hard to overcome deep seated doubts by “others” over their neutrality and sincerity.

Yet, sincere efforts must be made to achieve order and democracy. The challenge is a daunting one and the failure to tackle it will be disastrous. The charges of complicity of security forces in perpetrating deliberate brutalities against the Madhesis in Nepalganj must be investigated fairly and the report must be made public. The government must severely punish those responsible to deter such future behavior. The same should be done for other situations (Lahan, Janakpur etc). Nepali leaders should also live by their own democratic profession and accept population as the basis of representation; it is people that need to be represented not mountains and trees. National political parties must field candidates whose ethnic, cultural and linguistic profiles closely represent their constituency. All the demands of the Terai people must be given fair consideration.

Girija, Give A Speech Like Gyane Did In April

The Pahadi diaspora is quiet.

I did not distinguish between the Pahadi and the Madhesi when I worked full time for a year before the April Revolution happened. I did not distinguish when I worked through the Democratic Party circles in New York City on behalf of Nepal.

Are Madhesis not Nepali like you are? Or are they not part of your definition of Nepali?

The animal behavior on the part of the Pahadi police/army is going to split the country into two. The total blindness of the leadership of the Pahadi political parties is going to split the country into two.

Is not the Madhesi cause your cause?

Where is the Non Resident Nepali Association?

Where is the Nepalese Americas Council today?

Are these not your people?

Manu makhu marsya kha? Manchhe hoina marsya ho?

Girija, Give A Speech Like Gyane Did In April

The animals in power are going to lose power or they are going to lose the country. One of the two is going to happen.

Where are my fellow Janajatis today? Were we not supposed to build a DaMaJaMa coalition of social justice? Why will you not express solidarity? Why will you not join us? Are Pahadi Dalits Pahadi first and Dalit second? Are Pahadi Janajatis Pahadi first and Janajati second?

I have not heard of a single statement of support by any Dalit or Janajati organization to the Madhesi Movement, not a single one from any women's rights organization.

Where are the human rights organizations and their jet-setting leaders? Where are the NGOs?

This is shameful.

Today I am utterly, totally ashamed of the entire Nepali diaspora.

I am ashamed of the eight party coalition in power. I am ashamed of Girija Koirala. He could bring this chaos to an end with one speech of reconciliation and concession. But he will not do it. Why?

Girija, Give A Speech Like Gyane Did In April

I am ashamed of ANTA too. Why are you quiet? This is a time to take sides. The people are right. The people in power are wrong. You got to take sides and express solidarity. We got to express moral and logistical support.

I am ashamed of the Indian establishment. America might not have heard of the term Madhesi, Europe might not have. But looks to me like India has not either.

This movement is not about peace talks any more than the April Revolution. This movement is about reaching a concrete conclusion, the conclusion of equality.

Girija, Give A Speech Like Gyane Did In April

Prachanda and the Maoists can go to hell.

These are ungrateful people. They forget all the help they received into their getting mainstreamed. They forget.

Prachanda is no communist. At the core of it, he is just another Pahadi Bahun, with all his anti-Madhesi prejudices intact.

This is not about Prachanda. This is not about Goit. This is about the 13 million Madhesi people.

Ye to aar ki paar ki ladai hai.

We will take total equality, or we will get ourselves a separate country. Jo des apne ko us des ka nagrik hi na mane us des mein rah ke pana kya hai?

Girija, Give A Speech Like Gyane Did In April

When I think long term, I see a South Asian economic union, I see an Asian century. So having a separate Madhesh country does not make a lot of sense to me. The global trend is towards political integration.

But an integration that is based on fundamental, seemingly incurable inequality is no integration at all.

The term Nepali has never included someone like me. I have been hoping that perhaps for the first time ever I will become a Nepali through the constituent assembly. But that can only happen if that assembly is truly representative.

That constituent assembly is not going to be fair to the Madhesi if three million Madhesis are given citizenship papers and another three million are denied the same.

That constituent assembly is not going to be fair if the 205 electoral constituencies are not based on equal population.

And so the heck with the constituent assembly.

Girija loha lega to hum bhi loha lenge.

This is a time for every Nepali to show their true colors. If they are against the Madhesi Movement for total equality, they are not Nepali. Their Nepal does not include the Madhesi.

Those who deny the citizenship papers to the Madhesi are the ones who want the Madhesi to go set up a separate country.

Nagarikta nahin doge to desh lenge. Alag se desh khada karenge. Le lo batan ya de do batan.

Girija, Give A Speech Like Gyane Did In April

I salute the brave street fighters of the Madhesi Movement.

Khare raho, khare raho, hum tumhare saath hain.

B. K. Rana: Carter, Palestine and Apartheid

Carter, Palestine and Apartheid

B. K. Rana

Email: rana1616@yahoo.com

Today, January 23, 2007, President Jimmy Carter is on a visit to Brandeis University in Waltham, a suburban campus in Boston. He is scheduled to discuss his recently published controversial book: Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid. The book has drawn harsh criticism from a Harvard Law professor Alan Dershowitz.

Earlier, President Carter was invited to debate on the book with the professor. But the President turned down the invitation which sparked an outcry from some students and faculty. They urged President Carter should be invited to campus without conditions. The Brandeis was founded by the American Jewish community. About half of whose students are Jewish origins.

Somehow or the other, the university could convince President Carter to speak on the book saying that there will be no prior conditions. President Carter is set to speak to a closed session of the university faculty this evening. Obviously, no public would have any access to listen to his lecture. Hopefully, his lecture will be available in print media tomorrow morning ! I will read most of the materials on his lecture.

Prior to the program, President Carter was here in Harvard Cooperative Society - in short ‘Harvard Coop’- to sign the book. I had bought one sometime ago and already had a cursory look onto it. The book, by the 39th President of United States of America, appeared to me a bit different than his other books including The New York Times bestsellers ‘Our Endangered Values’.

I stood in line, waited my turn to pass through the ‘security checks’ in the first floor. Actually, it was not any ‘tight’ security. There were a number of desciplined buyers in line up the stairs to the second floor and third floor also. Of course, there were some polite security personnel in civil dress watching or directing everyone in the line. Some police were also seen standing or walking past us – the enthustic ‘book-buyers’ or Jimmy Carter fans.

In the meantime, from my shoulder behind sounded a masculine voice saying that he ‘was born in Lebanon, grew-up in Palestine and living currently in USA’. He was talking to one of his acquaitances behind. Understandably, he was a pro-Palestine fellow. I didn’t think it would be of any use to turn around to see him and say ‘Hi, I am from Nepal’ or ‘the conflict ravaged Himalayan country of Nepal as yours in the middle-east’. An avarage Nepalese like myself may not have any particular concern either over Lebanon, Palestine or Isreal, however, Nepal does send ‘Shanti Senas’ or ‘troops for peace’ in Lebanon at the call of United Nations.

I think Nepal began sending such ‘Shanti Senas’ after [or later] the signing of Camp David Accords[1] on September 17, 1978 by Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin. To successfully finalize these two accords, they had twelve days of secret negotiations at Camp David - a presidential retreat outside the White House in Maryland. The two agreements were signed at the White House, and were witnessed by President Carter. Sadat seemed to be willing to call the accords ‘the Carter Accords’. Later Sadat was assissanated on October 6, 1981 apparently for signing the accords. Carter termed Sadat as one of the bold and couragious leraders he had ever met.

I was a student when Carter had been able to persuade Sadat and Begin to sign the accords. A ever smiling face Mr. Carter could bring peace in between Egypt and Isreal but the middle-east still remains burning. My country, Nepal is also burning now. A faint hope is that peace will prevail in the land of Buddha – the prince of peace.

I have great respect for President Carter as he spoke of human rights for peace and justice in the world. He was awarded Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 "for his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development”.

The Carter Center is deeply concerned over Nepals’s socio-economic conditions and current peace processess also. In the meantime, we can hope President Carter would also speak in support of the larger mass of drisadvantaged communities across South Asia including Nepal for their basic human rights for peace and prosperity in the region.
