Right Honorable Mr. Madhav Kumar Nepal, Prime Minister of Nepal, was born in Nepal's southern Rautahat district on March 6, 1953. He graduated in commerce from Tribhuvan University in 1973 and worked in banking services before joining politics.

Mr. Nepal joined the communist movement in 1969 as a member of Communist Party of Nepal (CPN) under Pushpa Lal Shrestha, founder of the CPN. During his political career, Mr. Nepal spent two years as a political prisoner. In the democratic struggle against the one-party Panchayat System, he remained underground from 1974 to 1989. In 1978, Mr. Nepal became a founding politburo member of the Communist Party of Nepal (Marxist Leninist), which later became CPN (United Marxist Leninist), popularly called UML in Nepal.

He played an active role during the first People's Movement and he was one of the members of the commission that drafted the Nepalese constitution in 1990. In 1991 he led the opposition in the National Assembly, the upper house of the Nepalese parliament. In 1995 he became Deputy Prime Minister with foreign and defense ministries under his portfolio in the Nepalese government led by Prime Minister Man Mohan Adhikari.

Since 1995 he has remained one of the main leaders in Nepalese politics, including his role as the leader of the Nepalese opposition in the House of Representatives from 1999 to 2002. With other democratic parties, he played an active role in leading the People's Movement in 2006 that overpowered absolute monarchy and contributed to the signing of peace agreements with the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist), beginning a peace process to end the deadly internal conflict that had entrenched the country for over a decade, killing over 13,000 people.

Mr. Nepal was the General Secretary of the CPN (UML) until he resigned in April 2008 after remaining in that position for over a decade. In 2009 Mr. Nepal became a member of the Constituent Assembly and was elected chairman of Constitutional Committee of the Constituent Assembly that is entrusted to draft Nepal's new constitution. He became Prime Minister of Nepal on May 25, 2009.

Apart from Nepali and English, Mr. Nepal also speaks Hindi and regional dialects of Maithali and Bhojpuri. He is married to Ms. Gayatri Nepal. They have a daughter and a son.

सुरेस अाले मगरजी िसनीयर मान्छे हुनुहुँदो रहेछ। २०४७ मा नै अािदवासी जनजाित महासंघ खोलेको मान्छे। अनुहार पिन कर्मा ग्याल्जेन शेर्पा जस्तो जस्तो। कर्मा चािहं अिल उमेर ढलेको िवद्यार्थी नेता जस्तो। प्याट्ट प्याट्ट बोिलहाल्ने। सुरेशजी चािहं प्रोफेसर जस्तो। Measured tone मा बोल्ने। वहाँको के कित पढेलेखेको मलाई background थाहा भएन, तर वहाँ िवद्वान मान्छे भन्ने कुरा त्यसै थाहा हुन्छ। जनजाितको जुन stereotype प्रितपािदत गिरएको छ नेपाली मन र मष्ितष्कमा, सुरेशजी त्यसमा ठ्याक्कै िफट नहुने। वहाँ नेपालको राष्ट्िरय स्टेजमा अब कमसेकम एक दशक देिखनु हुनेछ जस्तो लाग्छ मलाई। त्यो जनजाित, मधेशी र दिलत र मिहलाकालािग राम्रो समाचार हो।

िवश्व अािदवासी जनजाित महासंघको नेतृत्वमा अिहले कर्मा, नेपालमा त्यसै पदमा अोमजी। तर ती दुवैले सुरेशजीबाट केही िसक्नुपर्ने छ। एकचोिट वीपीले भने जस्तो, राजा र काँग्रेसको घाँटी जोिडएको छ। म भन्छु मधेशी र जनजाितको घाँटी जोिडएको छ। यो कुरा सुरेशजीले कसरत नगरी बुझ्नुहुन्छ, कर्मा र अोमले केही कसरत गरेर बुझ्नुहुन्छ। तर साथै म यो पिन थपौं िक कर्मा र अोमबाट थुप्रै थुप्रै मधेशी नेताहरूले िहम्मतकासाथ, धक फुकाएर, कुनै पिन िकिसमको डर नमानीकन अाफ्नो कुरा र अडान अगािड राख्ने कुरा िसक्नुपर्ने भएको छ। त्यो अमेरीकामा रहेका मधेशीलाई पिन लागु हुन्छ, नेपालमा रहेका मधेशीलाई पिन लागु हुन्छ।

सत्य नारायण मन्िदरमा कार्यक्रम सिकएपिछ नेताहरूलाई र स्थानीय संगठनकाहरूलाई भनेर िवश्व अािदवासी जनजाित महासंघको निजकै रहेको अिफसमा िचयापान समारोह िथयो। िचयाको तातो पानी र िचयाका पुिरया, क्रीम र िचनी ठ्याक्क मेरो अगािड िथयो। राजदुत मधुजीले जो दुई सीट उता बिसरहनु भएको िथयो ल ल परमेन्द्रजी िचया बनाउनुपर्यो भन्नुभयो। मैले पिन थर्मसबाट रहेका कप जितमा तातो पानी हाल्दै िचयाका पुिरया हाल्दै गएँ। परी थापाजी मेरो ठ्याक्कै अगािड बस्नु भएको िथयो र सुरेशजी मेरो दायाँपट्िट। दुवैलाई पिन एक एक कप सारें। क्रीम र सुगर त सबले अाफै अाफै इच्छा लागे जित थप्ने हो।

परीजी र सुरेशजीले िचया छुनै भएन। बाहुनले मधेशीलाई िचया बनाउन अर्हाउने भनेर offense िलएको हो िक न दुध छ न िचनी छ भनेर offense िलएको हो त्यो मैले सोिधन, वहाँहरूको गफमा लट्िठएर होला।

मधुजी एक जना career bureaucrat, obviously intellectual मान्छे। िमलनसार। िवनम्र। UN कालािग राजदुत हुनलाई अरू बाहुनहरूभन्दा पिन राम्रै हुनुपर्छ होला। तर मैले व्यत्ितगत चािहं वहाँलाई सधैं न्यु यर्कमा रहेको एक जना अर्को नेपाली भन्दा बढी मानेको छैन। एउटा basic respect, राजनीितक छलफल गर्न पाइने व्यक्ित, ख्यालठट्टा पिन हुने। मैले ताराजीलाई न्यु यर्कका नेपालीको अिनर्वािचत नेता भनेर अालोचना गर्ने गरको छु। खास त त्यो व्यक्ित मधुजी हो।

म भनेको comprehensive immigration reform भएर नेपालीले न्यु यर्कमा पिन भोट खसाल्न पाउनुपर्छ भन्ने मान्छे। नेतृत्व त िनर्वािचत नै हुनुपर्छ भन्ने मेरो िवचार। तर त्यो नभइ सक्दा सम्म त न्यु यर्कका नेपाली त िवदेशी नै हो, र त्यो देशले एउटा राजदुत पठाइिदएको अवस्था छ। स्थानीय नेपालीले कार्यक्रम गर्दा वहाँलाई सधैं िनमन्त्रण गर्छन्।

प्रभाकर प्रखर वक्ता हुनुहँदो रहेछ। अत्यन्त logically अाफ्नो कुरा अगािड सार्ने। माअोवादी सेनाको डेपुटी कमान्डर मान्छे, युद्ध ताका त ज्युँदोलाई सुताउने वहाँको िजम्मेवारी नै िथयो। भाषण गर्दा सुतेकालाई ब्युँताइिदने स्टाइल रहेछ वहाँको। म माअोवादी होइन, वहाँ माअोवादी हो। र माअोवादीको के हो ideology भन्ने मलाई थाहा छ। तर शान्ित प्रक्िरयामा अाइसकेपिछ वहाँहरूलाई एउटा basic respect िदनुपर्ने हुन्छ। कितलाई यही हो मौका, गाली गरौं जस्तो पिन लाग्यो। युद्ध सधैं ugly नै हुन्छ। १० वर्षको गृहयुद्धमा शाही सेनाले दुई ितहाइ र माअोवादी सेनाले एक ितहाइ िहंसा नामको पाप गरेकै हो। तर अब दक्िषण अफ्िरकामा जस्तो Truth And Reconciliation Commission को बाटो जानुपर्ने हुन्छ।

प्रभाकरको भाषण लगभग मैले पुरा िभिडयोमा कैद गरको छु। अनलाइन राखौंला। अन्ितम वक्ता सुरेशजी हो भनेर ंमैले एक घन्टाको िभिडयोमा केही िमनेट मात्र बाँंकी राखें वहाँपिछ। तर त्यसपिछ कर्माले बडो जोरदार भाषण िदए। पाँच िमनेट त्यो पिन िभिडयोमा कैद गर्नुपर्ने, एक िमनेट मात्र छ। बाहुनलाई गाली गर्न कसैले कर्मासँग िसकोस्।

प्रभाकरपिछ एक जना काँग्रेसी सांसदले बोले। माअोवादीभन्दा हामी कम छैनौं भाषण गर्नमा भनेर भाषण गर्ने काम कम िचच्याउने काम बढी गरे।

नेपालको शान्ित प्रक्िरयाले अझै पिन िवश्व हल्लाउने संभावना राखेको छ। Democratic republic of state funded parties मा पुग्न सिकयो भने अप्िरल क्रान्ित भनेको अक्टोबर क्रान्ित र फ्रेन्च क्रान्ितको हाराहारीमा पुग्छ। नेपालले चीन र भारतलाई डोर्याउँछ। िफडेलले के क्रान्ित export गर्यो भन्ने, लोकतन्त्र नभएको िवश्वको प्रत्येक देशमा नेपालको अप्िरल क्रान्ित export हुन्छ। तीन हप्ता देश पुरै ठ्याप्प बन्द गिरदेउ, अिन सर्वदलीय सरकार बनाउ, अिन संिवधान सभाकालािग पुर्ण समानुपाितक िनर्वाचन गर, कमसेकम प्रत्येक तेस्रो नाम िलस्टमा मिहला हुनुपर्ने गरी। त्यो हो फर्मुला। बुशले जस्तो साढे तीन trillion डलर खर्च गर्ने गरी अफगािनस्तान र इराक invade गर्ने होइन। लोकतन्त्र त्यसरी फैिलंदैन। लोकतन्त्र फैिलन जनता जाग्नुपर्छ।

लीलामिणजीको नाम मैले २०४६ पिछ नै सुन्दै अाएको, पत्र पत्िरकामा पढ्दैअाएको, फोटो हेर्दैअाएको। नभम्बर २००५ मा हाम्रो फोनमा लामो गफ भयो, दुई चार पटक। राजा फाल्न continuous movement को अावश्यकता छ भन्ने हाम्रो वैचािरक सहमित भयो। एक दुई वटा अाम सभा, दुई चार िदन नेपाल बन्द गरेर केही हुनेवाला छैन। सडकमा अाउने र राजा नहटेसम्म सडकबाट नहट्ने। त्यो सुत्र।

यो न्यु यर्कको पिहलो नेपाली कार्यक्रम हो जसमा मधेसी संगठन ANTA का पिन एक जना प्ितिनिधले बोले। अिनलले ANTA New York Metro च्याप्टरका कार्यवाहक अध्यक्ष िरतेश चौधरीलाई भने, िरतेशले िरजवुडमा बस्नेअिमत साहको नाम िसफारीश गरे। अिमतले बडो fluent नेपालीमा अाफ्नो कुरा राखे।

न्यु यर्कमा "good" क्षेत्री ठकुरी छन् एक दुई जना, अिनल शाही र प्रकाश बोम जस्ता। मैले कार्यक्रम शुरू हुनु अगािड प्रकाशजीलाई िजस्काइरहेको िथएँ। "तपाई त के हो, पु्रण समानुपाितक पिन भन्िदया छ, federalism पिन भन्िदया छ, ठकुरी खलकप्ित यस्तो सार्हो बेइमानी?"

दुवै जना ADHRN का पदािधकारी हुन्। अिनलको नेतृत्वमा ADHRN ले समावेशीको नारालाई मुर्त रूप िदएको छ। उपाध्यक्षमा मधेशी मिहला िवन्दु चौधरी। अिन नगेन्दर् इङगम र लव बुढा मगर जस्ता न्यु यर्कका सबैभन्दा हर्ताकर्ता युवा जनजाितहरू पदािधकारी। त्यसले ADHRN लाई अिहले न्यु यर्कको नम्बर एक, nonpartisan राजनीितक संगठन नै बनाइिदएको छ।

अिनल न्यु यर्कको िमनी नेपालको मेरो नम्बर एक साथी। राजनीितमा पिन, िबजनेसमा पिन, र व्यक्ितगत पिन। मिहनौं अगािड एक जना नेपाल फर्िकन लागेको साथीलाई िवदा गर्न अिनल, अिनलको स्रीमती र केही साथीहरू एउटा थाइ रेष्टोराँमा भेला भएका िथयौं। अिनल हङकङमा हुर्केको भनेर अिनलको स्रीमतीले िजस्केर भिनन्। यो परमेन्द्रको अिनलसँग अात्मीयता बढेको अिनल बािहर हुर्केको पहाडी भन्ने लािगराख्या रैछ wifie लाई। मलाई त्यो कुरा थाहा िथएन। मैले कल्पना पिन गरेको िथइनँ।

मधेशी वक्ता परमेन्द्र भगत िकन भएन भन्ने केहीलाई लागेको रहेछ। मलाई लागेन। पिहलो कुरा, न्यु यर्कमा ANTA स्थापना गर्ने म नै हुँ तर म त्यो संगठनको सदस्य होइन। मैले त्यस संगठनकोप्रितिनिधत्व गर्न िमल्दैन। दोस्रो कुरा, अिमत साहले बडो राम्रो बोले।

म फ्रन्ट रोमा बसेको िथएँ। नेमिकपा का सांसदले र लगत्तै प्रभाकरजीले अा-अाफ्नो क्यामरा मलाई िदनुभो। मैले वहाँहरू बोलेको भाषणको फोटो िखच्िदएँ। वहाँहरू मञ्चमा हुनुहुन्थ्यो।

The lesson we have learnt from the past 30 years of community forestry is that the best way to save the forests is to hand over their management to local communities. We now need to go from 26 percent to a full 100. Nepal’s forests need to be managed by local communities everywhere, not by the government in Kathmandu. Nepal’s community forest is a success story replicated all over the world. This is one sector where Nepal is showing the way. We should build on it.
